Am I pretty or ugly, short or tall, skilled or unskilled, talented or untalented? Once you understand the Law of Relativity, you begin to understand that you are none of these options, you just “are”. Just like the Law of Attraction, the Law of Relativity is another of the Natural Laws of the Universe. As we gain an understanding of these laws, we can figure out how to make these laws work for or with us rather than against us. When they work with us, life seems to be so much easier … and more enjoyable.
An example of how I gained a greater understanding of the Law of Relativity is with my skiing. I only began to ski a few years ago and after I passed the “half century” mark in age. Since I live in Colorado with many friends that are expert skiers, I have many opportunities to hear their stories of traversing moguls or exploring new Black/Diamond runs or riding the rails.
In the past I had felt pressure to push myself to achieve their skill level. Needless to say it would be difficult, if not impossible to compete with those that have been on the ski slopes since they were youngsters. As a result whenever I compared myself to them I put myself into a situation that I would be discouraged because I am not and probably will never be as good as they are. At the same time, I have begun to realize there are things that I do more easily than others, such as ice skating, sewing or navigating unfamilar cities.
I now realize the pressure I put on myself with regards to skiing was self-inflicted and caused me more pain than necessary. No one really cares how well I ski … or even if I ski at all. Upon this recent realization that I was really only skiing for myself and not for anyone, I have relaxed. As a result I now compare myself only to my own progress and am thrilled to be able to enjoy the opportunity to ski.
Last weekend I went skiing for the first time this season. I relaxed, concentrated on being grateful to be in Colorado and enjoyed the picture perfect day of fresh powder that was accompanied with deep blue skies, bright white snow with the backdrop of the dark green pine trees, and pleasant temperatures! Despite the fact it was the first time I skied in over a year, I did better than I have in the past. It turned out to be a wonderful day that was extremely pleasurable!
The next time I find myself comparing myself or my performance with others, I will stop the little voice in my head and be thankful for what I have and compare me with myself – not with others.
I also plan to continue to study and seek to understand these natural laws of the universe so I will be working with, not against, me. This will allow me to go through life with ease and grace.
